My main problem with cooking (apart from a near phobia of handling raw meat) is the timing and sequencing really stresses me out. I worry constantly about getting it wrong and over/under-cooking some component. It takes any pleasure out of cooking. I see other people enjoy it but for me unless it is something I know really well, I’d rather sit an exam.
You may have seen this story last week. Well that was about me and 999 other people and come April 5th I will officially be one of Thatcher’s Threee Million.
I’m 55 and I can’t face the bullshit of interviews so it’s probably game over. I’m good at what I did (Engineering Manager) but I have zero enthusiasm to explain that several times over and get quizzed on my mental recall of random trivia of HTTP verbs for things that in real life are abstracted away or found with a quick DDG.
I had a thought in the shower this morning that I do my best thinking there. I then thought about why I think best there and came to the conclusion that it was because I didn’t have my phone to distract me.
It’s too easy to grab my phone and fiddle with it to occupy my mind. I don’t switch off and just let my mind wander. So to this end, I’m going to purge my phone of all consumption apps i.e. games, ebooks, news, mastodon for at least 4 weeks. I want to see if I find myself thinking more because I do enjoy having a good idea.
