I spent 14 years commuting into London and I read a lot of books. I had shelves of books that I basically read once and then put away. I bought a Kindle (around 2010 maybe) to cut down on the clutter.
I’ve ended up with many many books on it. Earlier Amazon announced that they were removing the ability to download copies of purchased books so I fired up Calibre, installed some plug ins, ran some scripts, and got them for posterity.
I wanted to move away from the Kindle eco-system to something where I could buy my books from where I wanted and read them on any device I wanted.
The killer feature for me is progress sync. I can put my Kindle down and pick up my phone and open the book where I left off. I really wanted to keep this functionality.
Today I jailbroke my Kindle and installed KOReader. With a bit more too and fro, scripts, giving Calibre a home on my docker host and some head scratching around port numbers, I think I’ve reached nirvana. I installed KOReader on my phone, configured it, opened a book and it asked if I wanted to move forward 18% in the book. Success!
It only exists on my LAN, if I want to use it remotely it will be via Wireshark.
